Lingerie ABC: What Is A Demi Cup Bra?

Lingerie ABC: What Is A Demi Cup Bra?

Looking for a sexy, sophisticated style that gives great support while exposing a little more skin? Then seek out a demi cup bra. Often confused with a balcony or balconette (and many manufacturers use the terms interchangeably, just to add to the confusion), a demi cup bra is simply a half cup bra by another name – in other words, a bra, usually underwired, that covers half the bust.

Of course, there are a few variations. A demi cup is often a fully sheer bra, in mesh or lace, sometimes with strategically-placed embroidery to preserve your modesty. Other styles might feature a double layer in the lower half of the cups, or add a side sling for support. Vertical seams can also help to make this style a supportive choice.

Ideal for wearing with low cut or scoop neck tops, a demi cup bra is a flattering option if your bust is not as full as you'd like it to be. Thanks to its uplifting effect, a demi cup bra will showcase your upper bust to its best advantage. And while this style is a great solution for smaller bust sizes, DD+ wearers need not feel left out: manufacturers are becoming increasingly adept at producing half cup styles for larger cup sizes too.

What's new in demi bras this season? While you can never go wrong with classic black or ivory, we're particularly taken with the new collection by French luxury lingerie brand Antinea by Lise Charmel. For summer 2018, the European brand has included on-trend bursts of color in its demi cup bras. The Séduction Complice bra is a gorgeous embroidered tulle and lace confection in bright fuchsia pink with delicate purple floral embroidery. With the two-tone lace overlay continuing onto the front straps, the bra is finished with a fuchsia and purple central bow. Pair with the matching tanga or bikini panties for a subtly sexy set in this season's hottest hue.
