Full Figured Fashion Week, a showcase for plus size fashion, celebrated its tenth anniversary in New York City. Rihanna, meanwhile, recently shone a spotlight on inclusive lingerie sizing with the launch of her Savage X Fenty range. So here at Lavinia Lingerie, we’re taking the opportunity to talk plus size lingerie.

We’ve been introducing more curvy collections to the website in response to your requests. At Lavinia, we stock panties up to a size 5XL with bras going up to size 52G, and we’re constantly on the lookout for on-trend plus size bras and panties from our favorite European lingerie brands to add to our selection.

First, though, what is plus size? The mainstream definition is size 14 and above, which actually applies to most of us—it’s estimated that 68 percent of American women are a dress size 14 or over. In bra sizing terms, meanwhile, cup sizes of DD and above are considered to be “fuller bust”, while “plus size” refers to the back band, with 40 being the threshold.

Don’t worry, though: sexy lingerie doesn’t stop at a size 40DD. Sure, a plus size bra has certain features that will make it more comfortable to wear. A thoughtfully designed plus size bra might have wide, padded, non-stretch straps to support your breasts without digging into your shoulders. Wide side and back wings are great for added support as well as helping to reduce bra bulge (pro tip: always try on a bra underneath your clothes to make sure you have the most flattering fit). Leotard backs, where the straps come together at the back, help to prevent the straps from slipping. And the reason you’ll see so many three-part cup constructions out there? They’re a tried-and-tested source of support for larger cup sizes.

But these days, you don’t have to sacrifice sex appeal for comfort. Forget about over-the-shoulder-boulder-holders; thanks to European brands like Gorteks, Rosme and Sermija, plus size lingerie is sexier than ever.
